SSC CHSL Vs. SSC CGL – What Changes in Strategy You Need?

Many students preparing for government exams often wonder whether the same study plan works for both SSC CHSL and SSC CGL. Even though the subjects look similar, experts and toppers say the preparation style cannot be exactly the same. The level of questions, the way topics are asked, and the speed needed in both exams are quite different. This article explains these differences in an easy way and shares useful tips from toppers to help understand how the study approach should change for each exam.

SSC CHSL vs. SSC CGL Tier 1: Exam Pattern Comparison

Even though the pattern and syllabus mostly match, the effort needed, the type of questions, and the level of competition are different. The basic syllabus can be prepared together for both exams, but SSC CGL needs extra practice with higher-level questions, tougher mock tests, and quicker solving methods.

Feature SSC CHSL Tier 1 SSC CGL Tier 1
Number of Questions 100 100
Total Marks 200 200
Time Duration 60 minutes 60 minutes
Sections General Intelligence, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, English Language General Intelligence, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, English Comprehension
Negative Marking 0.50 marks per wrong answer 0.50 marks per wrong answer

Similar Difficulty Level in Both Exams

The questions in SSC CHSL Tier 2 and SSC CGL Tier 2 are almost the same in terms of difficulty. In fact, many questions are often repeated across both exams. But the structure of the exam, number of questions, and marking pattern vary slightly. Understanding this is important to plan your preparation in the right direction.

SSC CHSL Tier 2 Exam Pattern

Section Module Subjects No. of Questions Marks Time
Section I Module-I Mathematical Abilities 30 90 1 hour
Module-II Reasoning & General Intelligence 30 90
Section II Module-I English Language & Comprehension 40 120 1 hour
Module-II General Awareness 20 60
Section III Module-I Computer Knowledge 15 45 15 minutes
Module-II Typing/Skill Test 10-15 minutes

Each correct answer carries 3 marks, and 1 mark is deducted for each wrong answer.

SSC CGL Tier 2 Exam Pattern

Section Module Subjects No. of Questions Marks Time
Section I Module-I Mathematical Abilities 30 90 1 hour
Module-II Reasoning & General Intelligence 30 90
Section II Module-I English Language & Comprehension 45 135 1 hour
Module-II General Awareness 25 75
Section III Module-I Computer Knowledge 20 60 15 minutes
Module-II Data Entry Speed Test 15 minutes

Same marking scheme as CHSL: 3 marks for each correct answer, and 1 mark is deducted for each wrong answer.

Common Topics in the Syllabus

The subjects covered in both exams are almost the same. Here are the key topics:

Mathematics: Number System, Percentage, Profit & Loss, SI & CI, Geometry, Algebra, Mensuration, and Trigonometry.
Reasoning: Classification, Analogy, Coding-Decoding, Series, Puzzles, and Non-verbal Reasoning.
English: Grammar, Vocabulary, Cloze Test, Sentence Rearrangement, Voice, Narration, and Reading Comprehension.
General Awareness: Polity, History, Geography, Economy, Science, Current Affairs, and Static GK.
Computer Knowledge: MS Office basics, Internet, Email, Cyber Security, Hardware, and Software basics.

What Changes in Strategy Are Needed?

Even though both exams follow almost the same syllabus and ask similar types of questions, the preparation plan cannot be exactly the same. Each exam has a different level of difficulty, so the approach needs to be adjusted according to the target. A few small but important changes in study style can make a big difference in the final result. The detailed preparation strategy has been explained below for better understanding:

Strategy for SSC CHSL Tier 2:

  • Since English and Computer sections have fewer questions, focus on accuracy and time management.
  • Practice for the Typing Test and revise basic computer knowledge regularly.
  • Grammar-based and reading comprehension questions should be practiced more, as they are crucial for scoring in the English section.

Strategy for SSC CGL Tier 2:

  • English section has more weightage. So, focus on mastering comprehension and advanced grammar.
  • General Awareness section has 25 questions, slightly more than CHSL. Stay updated with current affairs and revise key static topics.
  • Practice Data Entry Speed Test (DEST) and revise computer concepts in detail.

Common Preparation Tips for Both:

  • Use the SSC CGL Tier 2 exam pattern while practicing mock tests. It covers all areas and prepares you better for both exams.
  • Make a subject-wise timetable covering all topics regularly.
  • Focus on speed and accuracy through daily practice and full-length mock tests.

The SSC CHSL and SSC CGL exams may look similar, but their Tier 2 patterns have a few key differences. To succeed, it’s important to adjust your strategy according to the exam structure. Focus on your weak areas, revise core subjects, and take regular mock tests. With the right preparation plan, you can perform well in both exams.

In Which Force you Need Highest Score in SSC GD Exam

The SSC GD (General Duty) Constable exam is one of the most common exams for government security jobs in India. Through this exam, candidates get a chance to join forces like BSF, CISF, CRPF, SSB, ITBP, Assam Rifles, NIA, and SSF. To get selected, the score must be higher than the cutoff decided by the Staff Selection Commission. This article tells which force needs the highest marks in the SSC GD exam and the reason behind it.

In Which Force You Need Highest Score In SSC GD Exam?

The SSC GD exam opens the doors to several security forces in India, but the score needed for each force is never the same. Some forces demand higher marks because of limited seats, tough competition, and strict selection standards. Aspirants often think which force needs the highest score, but the exact answer becomes clear only after understanding how the SSC GD process works. This exam includes a computer-based test, physical tests, and medical exam, and the final force allocation depends completely on the overall performance and final merit list. Aspirants are advised to go through this article to understand the pattern behind higher cutoffs.

Understanding SSC GD Cutoff Marks

Cutoff marks are the minimum marks a candidate must score to qualify for further stages. These vary across forces and depend on factors like:

Number of Vacancies: More vacancies usually result in lower cutoffs.
Difficulty Level of the Exam: Tougher exams often lead to lower cutoffs.
Category of the Candidate: Categories like General, SC, ST, OBC, etc., have different cutoffs.
Force Popularity: Forces like BSF and CISF, being highly sought after, may have higher cutoffs.
Domicile State of Candidates: The SSC GD cutoff is released state-wise and further divided based on district categories, such as general districts and border districts. Typically, the cutoff for border districts is lower compared to general districts, resulting in significant variations in the SSC GD cutoff marks.

SSC GD Previous Year Cutoff

The SSC GD Examination is conducted for a total of 160 marks. Below, we have provided the minimum scores candidates should aim for, categorized force-wise. These scores are based on the normalized cutoff of the previous year. Note that the actual raw marks required are usually lower than these. Candidates should prepare for the exam by setting these targets in mind. However, keep in mind that the cutoff can increase if the number of vacancies decreases.

Force Minimum Marks required
BSF (Border Security Force) 136
CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) 139
CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) 138
SSB (Sashastra Seema Bal) 141
ITBP (Indo-Tibetan Border Police) 137
AR (Assam Rifles) 140
NIA (National Investigation Agency) 145
SSF (Secretariat Security Force) 153

Forces Requiring Highest Cut Off

The Secretariat Security Force (SSF) and the National Investigation Agency (NIA) generally have the highest cutoff scores in the SSC GD examination. Following them, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) also sees a comparatively higher cutoff.

SSF: The role is prestigious and limited in vacancies, focusing on VIP protection and high-security tasks.
NIA: It involves counter-terrorism and investigative work, requiring candidates with top-notch skills.
CISF: Preferred for better job stability and urban postings. It also includes duties in airports, industries, and key infrastructure.
If your aim is to join these forces, you must focus on scoring above 90% in the written exam and perform well in physical tests.

How to Achieve the Highest Score?

Strategize Preparation: Start by making a proper study plan. Give more attention to subjects that are easy to score, like Reasoning and General Awareness. These sections can help you secure good marks with less effort if prepared well. For General Awareness, focus on important topics like current affairs, history, and geography.

Manage Time: Managing your time during both preparation and the actual exam is very important. Divide your study time equally among all sections, and practice solving mock tests regularly. Mock tests help you improve your speed and accuracy, which are crucial for attempting maximum questions correctly within the given time.

Maintain Physical Fitness: Physical fitness is also a big part of clearing the SSC GD selection process. To perform well in the Physical Efficiency Test (PET), maintain good fitness levels by practicing running, long jumps, and other exercises that are part of the test. Staying fit will not only help you clear this round but also boost your confidence.

Set a Target: It’s important to set a high target, especially if you’re aiming for forces like SSF or NIA, which usually have the highest cutoffs. Check the previous year’s cutoffs for these forces and prepare accordingly. To achieve this, practice more mock tests and revise thoroughly.

Conclusion

To join forces like SSF and NIA, you need to aim for the best score in the SSC GD exam. Prepare well for both the written and physical tests. Always set your goals based on the force you want to join. With hard work and regular practice, you can get your dream job in India’s top paramilitary forces.
