Bohag Bihu 2023:  Bihu is a significant festival in Assam that celebrated thrice a year, Bohag Bihu marks the beginning of harvesting season, and  is generally celebrated in the second week of April . It holds great cultural, agricultural, and social significance, making it an important festival of Assam. Bohag Bihu is also known as Rongali Bihu. Bohag Bihu is a seven days long festival and is celebrated with great enthusiam. Bohag Bihu is among the three Bihu festivals celebrated in Assam , the other two are ‘Kongali Bihu’ and ‘Magh Bihu’ falling in the months of October and January respectively.

Bohag Bihu Festival

During Bohag Bihu, traditional delicacies such as pitha (rice cake) and larus (a traditional food made of rice and coconut) are prepared and enjoyed. Men and women dress up in traditional Muga silk (golden silk) attires and dance to the tunes of Bihu and the beats of the bihu dhol (traditional drum) all across the state. Bihu dance, Assam’s most popular folk dance, is an integral part of the celebrations. This year Bohag Bihu will be celebrated from 14 April to 20 April 2023.

Bohag Bihu 2023: Seven Days of Bohag Bihu

Day 1: Goru Bihu – The festival starts with Goru Bihu, which is dedicated to cattle. On this day, cattle, especially cows, are bathed and adorned with new clothes and ornaments as a gesture of gratitude for their contribution to agriculture. Traditional music and dance performances are also held.

Day 2: Manuh Bihu – This day is dedicated to mankind, and people take a bath early in the morning and wear new clothes. They offer prayers to deities and seek blessings for a prosperous year ahead. Traditional Assamese games and sports are also organized.

Day 3: Kutum Bihu – This day is all about family gatherings and feasting. People visit their relatives, exchange gifts, and enjoy traditional Assamese dishes together. Folk songs and dances are performed, and cultural competitions are held.

Day 4: Senehi Bihu – This day is celebrated as a day of peace and goodwill. People visit friends and neighbors and exchange greetings.

Day 5: Mela Bihu – This day is marked by community fairs and markets. People come together to sell and buy various items, including handicrafts, agricultural produce, and traditional Assamese snacks.

Day 6: Chera Bihu – This day is dedicated to cleaning and preparing for the upcoming New Year. People clean their homes, paint them with fresh colors, and decorate them with flowers and traditional motifs.

Day 7: Bohag Bihu (New Year) – The last day of Bahog Bihu marks the beginning of the Assamese New Year, also known as Bohag Bihu or Rongali Bihu. People wake up early, take a bath, and wear new clothes. They offer prayers and seek blessings from elders.

Each day of Bahog Bihu has its own significance and customs, and it is celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm by the people of Assam.
