History of World Health Day
World Health Organisation was formed in 1948 in Geneva. This day World Health Assembly was held the first time and it was decided to celebrate 7th April as World Health Day. On this day, various events with a particular theme are organized by Who at the international and national level. For more than 70 years this has brought to light important health issues such as mental health, maternal and child care, and climate change. The celebration is marked with activities that extend beyond the day itself and acts as an opportunity to focus worldwide attention on these important aspects of global health.
The theme of World Health Day 2021
COVID-19 has hit all countries hard, but its impact has been harshest on those communities which were already vulnerable, who are more exposed to the disease, less likely to have access to quality health care services, and more likely to experience adverse consequences as a result of measures implemented to contain the pandemic. The theme for this year’s World Health Day is building a fairer, healthier world for everyone.
As COVID-19 has highlighted, some people are able to live healthier lives and have better access to health services than others – entirely due to the conditions in which they are born, grow, live, work and age.
All over the world, some groups struggle to make ends meet with little daily income, have poorer housing conditions and education, fewer employment opportunities, experience greater gender inequality, and have little or no access to safe environments, clean water, and air, food security, and health services. This leads to unnecessary suffering, avoidable illness, and premature death. And it harms our societies and economies.
Significance of World Health Day
World Health Day is not just about hand-washing and healthy eating. It is a day that is observed worldwide by government and non-government health organizations with a focus on promoting healthier living habits that will help in increasing the life expectancy of people around the world. There are various organized activities, pledges, and support plans such as conferences for health workers, briefings for local politicians, as well as free or easy access to medical tests. Debates on related topics, art exhibitions, essay writing, competitions, and award ceremonies are conducted on World Health Day. This day has become a collective action aimed globally to protect human health and well-being.
