Women Officers To Be Granted Permanent Commission (PC) in all ten streams of the Indian Army
Ministry of Defence has announced a historic decision granting permanent commission to women officers in the Indian Army. The formal government sanction letter was issued on 23rd July 2020 for grant of permanent commission in all ten streams empowering the capabilities of women officers and their ability to shoulder larger roles in the Indian Army. The move was applauded by the netizens and ministers across the country. Women are finally given an equal opportunity to excel at top positions and prove their worth. Railway Minister, Piyush Goyal also tweeted about this decision and applauded the government.

The order specifies granting of permanent commission to women officers in all the ten streams namely;
- Army Air Defence (AAD),
- Signals,
- Engineers,
- Army Aviation,
- Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME),
- Army Service Corps (ASC),
- Army Ordnance Corps (AOC),
- Intelligence Corps
- Judge and Advocate General (JAG)
- Army Educational Corps (AEC).

Only 4% of the total strength of Officers are women officers in the Indian Army
In February 2020, the Supreme court advised the government to sanction PC to the women officers. The court also found data related to the women officers recruitment in the army where it was revealed that only 4% of the total strength of officers are dedicated to women. Amongst the 1,653 total Women Officers in the Indian Army, 77 women Officers have above 20 years of service and 255 officers have service tenure between 14 and 20 years. Earlier, 322 Women Officers approached the apex Court to demand the granting the Permanent Commission and the issue of command postings.
