What is Tomato Flu? Symptoms and Precautions

What is Tomato Flu?

Tomato flu or Tomato fever recently detected in the southern part of the country is a deadly virus among children below five years of age. It is a deadly virus that has been detected majorly in the southern part of the country. Kerala and Tamil Nadu are the major states which have recorded many cases from their local government hospitals of this unidentified flu.

An outburst of ‘Tomato Flu’ has triggered panic in Kerala’s Kollam district after the mysterious disease was detected in 80 children, all under five years of age.  A medical team is carrying out tests of those entering Coimbatore for fever, rashes and other illnesses at Walayar on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border.  The Kerala government has also set up a 24-member team to oversee screening of all the kids at anganwadi centres.

Symptoms of Tomato Fever

This virus is mainly attacking children below the age of five years. The infection is causing red round blisters on the skin, perhaps because of which it is called Tomato flu.

  • High fever
  • Dehydration
  • Body ache
  • Rashes
  • Blister
  • Swelling
  • Cramps
  • Vomiting
  • Sneezing
  • Running nose
  • Fatigue
  • Irritation in mouth
  • Discolouration in hands, legs and other parts of the body

Tomato Flu: Precautions 

  • Tomato fever is also contagious like other cases of flu. The infected person need to be kept in isolation as the flu could spread rapidly from one person to another.
  • Children should be prevented from scratching the blisters caused by the flu.
  • Proper rest and hygiene is also advised. Utensils, clothes and other things used by the infected persons must be sanitised to prevent the flu from spreading.
  • Fluid intake would also help counteract dehydration.
  • Parents are advised to immediately consult a doctor in case any of the above-mentioned symptoms are visible.
