Vocabulary For SSC Exams 2021: Day 14

Vocabulary is a set of familiar words in the languages known to a person. An extensive vocabulary is a useful tool in communicating and acquiring knowledge. For many people, developing vocabulary is a challenging task considering the plethora of words that can be learned. Everyone desires to have a perfect vocabulary for a comprehensive outlook.

1. Polymath (noun) बहुश्रुत
Meaning: a person of wide knowledge or learning.
Synonyms: intellectual, genius
Antonyms: Fool, illiterate
Usage: His CV reads something like a masterclass in being a polymath: he was an accomplished musician and designer.

2. Vacillate (verb) संदेह करना
Meaning: Waiver between different opinion or actions.
Synonym: temporize, hesitate, oscillate
Antonym: resolute
Usage: You might vacillate between ordering pizza and burger as both are testy.

3. Molder (verb) गलना
Meaning: to crumble into particles.
Synonym: decay, decompose
Antonym: Renew, restore
Usage: if you store your books in the damp basement of your uncle’s house, they are sure to molder.

4. Exhort (verb) समझाना
Meaning: Strongly encourage or urge to do something
Synonym: enjoin, adjure,
Antonym: discourage
Usage: Priya tries to Exhort her friend about her career but she is not ready to listen.

5. Dearth (noun) अकाल
Meaning: A scarcity or lack of something.
Synonym: meagreness, scantiness
Antonym: abundance, a surfeit
Usage: A dearth of nutritious food is a serious problem.

6. Titter (verb) दबी हुई हँसी
Meaning: Give a short, half-suppressed laugh, giggle
Synonym: giggle, snigger
Antonym: Graon, moan
Usage: The teen girls tittered at her light-hearted curse.

7. Slipshod (adjective) असावधानीपूर्ण
Meaning: characterized by a lack of care, thought, or organization.
Synonym: careless, lackadaisical
Antonym: meticulous, painstaking
Usage: Ravi did a slipshod job. His scholarship is slipshod at best.

8. Incommodious (adjective) असुविधाजनक
Meaning: Causing inconvenience or discomfort
Synonym: annoying, awkward
Antonym: convenient, comfortable
Usage: Because the heating unit is not working, it is rather incommodious in the house.

9. Buoy (verb) बढ़ावा देना
Meaning: to support something and make it more successful.
Synonyms: bolster, boost
Antonyms: depress, deplete
Usage: Her courage was buoyed by the doctor’s assurances.

10. Ratify (verb) पुष्टि करना
Meaning: confirmed or made official
Synonyms: approve, confirm
Antonyms: deny, destroy
Usage: For the rule change to be approved, it must be ratified by 8 out of 10 teams.
