Lohri, a seasonal festival of North India is as old as that of the story of Indus Valley civilisation itself. The Festival of Lohri, Thai Pongal and Makar Sankranti marks the beginning of the end of winter and the coming of spring and the new year. Both these days 13th and 14th January mark a new beginning, start of spring with festivals of Lohri and Makar Sankranti being celebrated on these days respectively.
Lohri is essentially a festival dedicated to fire and the sun god. It is the time when the sun transits the zodiac sign Makar (Capricorn), and moves towards the north. Pongal is a four-days-long harvest festival celebrated in Tamil Nadu, a southern state of India. Along with Lohri and Pongal, Makar Sankranti is also considered as one of the most auspicious days for Hindus. The festival is celebrated differently in different parts of India. Thousands of people take a dip in the river Ganga and pray to the Sun God.
