World Heritage Sites: General Awareness Notes for SSC CGL Tier-1 Exam

➀ Agra Fort => It is situated at Agra city in Utter Pradesh. It has been included in 1983 by UNESCO.UNESCO also takes the responsibility of its maintenance cost.

=> This group of
sanctuaries, founded by the Pallava kings, was carved out of rock along the
Coromandel coast in the 7th and 8th centuries. It is situated at Chingleput
District in Tamil Nadu. It has been included in 1984 by the UNISCO.

Sun Temple Konarak =>On the shores of the Bay of Bengal,
bathed in the rays of the rising sun, the temple at Konarak is a monumental
representation of the sun god Surya’s chariot. It has been included 1984.

➃ Ajanta Caves => It is situated at Aurangabad Distrist in
Maharashtra. The first Buddhist cave monuments at Ajanta date from the 2nd and
1st centuries B.C. During the Gupta period (5th and 6th centuries A.D.).It has
been included in 1983 by UNESCO.

➄ kaziranga National Park => It is situated in Assam. It is
inhabited by the world’s largest population of one-horned rhinoceroses, as well
as many mammals, including tigers, elephants, panthers and bears, and thousands
of birds.It has been included in 1985.

➅ Ellora Caves =>Ellora, with its uninterrupted sequence of
monuments dating from A.D. 600 to 1000, brings the civilization of ancient
India to life. It is situated at Aurangabad District in Maharashtra State. It
has been included in1983.

➆ Elephanta Caves => It is situated at Kolaba District in
Maharashtra State .The ‘City of Caves’, on an island in the Sea of Oman close
to Bombay, contains a collection of rock art linked to the cult of Shiva. It
has been included in 1987.

➇ Humayun’s Tomb => It is situated in Delhi. This tomb,
built in 1570, is of particular cultural significance as it was the first
garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent. It has been included in 1993.

➈ Archaeological Site of Nalanda mahavihara (Nalanda
=>It is situated at Nalanda in Bihar. It comprises the
archaeological remains of a monastic and scholastic institution dating from the
3rd century BCE to the 13th century BCE. It has been included in 2016.

➉ Rock Shelters of Bhimbetka =>It is situated in Madhya
Pradesh. The cultural traditions of the inhabitants of the twenty-one villages
adjacent to the site bear a strong resemblance to those represented in the rock
paintings. It has been included in 2003.
