The National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) has designated February 28 as National Science Day. National Science Day is celebrated to felicitate the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’. C.V. Raman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 for the discovery of Raman Effect. Science Week is also celebrated along with the National Science Day.

National Science Day Quick Facts:

  • Theme of NSC 2020: Women in Science
  • Theme of NSC 2019: Science for the People and the People for Science
  • First NSC was celebrated on February 28, 1987.

Theme-based science communication activities are carried out all over the country to mark the occasion. The Theme of the National Science Day 2020 is Women in Science. NSD 2020 Theme has been chosen for the purpose of increasing public appreciation of the scientific issues involved.

To mark NSD 2020, President Ram Nath Kovind will present several awards for science communication and popularization as well as for women scientists. He will give 21 awards at Vigyan Bhawan which will include

  • SERB Women Excellence Awards,
  • Augmenting Writing Skills For Articulating Research (AWSAR) awards,
  • National Science and Technology and Communication Awards.

Sir C.V. Raman and Raman Effect

  • Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman was born on 7 November 1888 at Trichy, Tamil Nadu.
  • On 28 February 1928, he started an experiment with K. S. Krishnan, what is now called the Raman Effects. Raman Effects are on Scattering of Light.
  • He won the 1930 Nobel Prize in Physics for “the scattering of light and for the discovery of the Raman effect“ and became first Asian and first non-white to receive any Nobel Prize in the sciences.

National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC), Department of Science and Technology (DST) acts as a nodal agency to support, catalyze and coordinate celebration of the National Science Day throughout the country in scientific institutions, research laboratories and autonomous scientific institutions associated with the Department of Science and Technology.
