On Thursday (March 20th, 2020) Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation and requested all the Indians to stay home on Sunday between 7 am and 9pm to fight the rapidly-spreading coronavirus. In his address to the nation, PM Modi said the growing challenge that has been posed by the coronavirus was not normal and requested everyone to implement social distancing.
“These are the testing times but we all must maintain the discipline in order to prevent the spreading of the virus,” PM said, adding that the pandemic has also severely affected the Indian economy. Confirmed cases of coronavirus have risen to 195 in India as on 20th March and killed 4 people. Globally deaths caused by coronavirus have crossed 10,000.
“Under ‘Janata Curfew’ no one will go out of their houses. It will also prepare us for the forthcoming days,” said PM Modi, hinting that such isolation drives could be essential in future to stop the spread of COVID19. PM Stated that the government will constitute a COVID-19 task force that will be headed by the Union finance minister to handle the economic challenges arising from the spread of the virus and the resultant impact on various sectors of the economy.
Modi also stressed on the need to avoid panic buying and assured that the government is taking all the necessary steps to make sure that the supply of essential commodities was not disrupted.
