    In 1936:
    Bihar and Odisha on 1 April 1936.

    In 1947:
    Assam and Punjab on 15 August 1947
    Jammu and Kashmir on 26 October 1947

    In 1950:
    Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh on 26 January 1950

    In 1956:
    Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and West Bengal all on 1 November 1956.

    In 1960:
    Gujarat and Maharashtra formed on 1 May 1960.

    In 1963:
    Nagaland was formed on 1 December 1963.

    In 1966:
    Haryana formed on 1 November 1966.

    In 1971:
    Himachal Pradesh on 25 January 1971.

    In 1972:
    Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura formed on 21 January 1972.

    In 1975:
    Sikkim acquired on 16 May 1975.

    1. Bihar and Orissa separated from Bengal in 1912. However it was until 1936 that Bihar and Orissa were made into separate provinces.

    2. The Assam legislative Council was expanded into an 108 Member assembly in 1947.

    3. Punjab was initially divided into West Punjab and East Punjab. Some part of it rests with Pakistan today. In 1966, Haryana was formed from Punjab and the hilly areas of the state were separated to form Himachal Pradesh.

    4. The state of Tamil Nadu was initially called Madras and C Rajagopalachari was its first Chief Minister. After agitations for formation of a separate Telugu state Andhra Pradesh was formed. And Madras was named Tamil Nadu in 1968.

    5. The state of Uttarakhand was formed from Uttar Pradesh.

    6. Kerala was formed under the States Reorganization Act of the Indian government in 1956.

    7. Along linguistic lines, Maharashtra and Gujarat were formed from Saurashtra on 1 May 1960.

    8. Nagaland became the 16th State of Independent India in 1963.

    9. Indian government reorganised the North East region to ensure effective control of the international borders – three new states came into existence on 21 January 1972.

    10. Uttarakhand formed from Uttar Pradesh whereas Chhattishgarh was formed from parts of Madhya Pradesh in the year 2000.

    11. Telangana was formed from Andhra Pradesh in the year 2014 after years and years of agitation.
